Cyprus has had an up-and-down road toward online gambling with a recent ban in 2012 that was considered somewhat controversial as it supports a monopoly of OPAP and blocks out all other companies. That said there are not many online gaming sites licensed or based in Cyprus and rather Cyprus is better known for hosting of forex and binary options sites instead.
Since the gaming ban took place many major online gaming companies have fully abandoned the country as a place to accept bets from. Some of these companies include William Hill and Betfair.
At one point the Cyprus National Betting Authority issued a ban on 270 online gaming sites forcing the local internet service providers (ISPs) to ban these 270 sites or face large fines if they didn't comply.
